The Vaccines and Medicines Safety Surveillance (VxMedSS) project will commence study activities with a Kick-off meeting on 1st Feb 2019 in Kampala, Uganda. VxMedSS is a European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDTCP2) and European Union funded career development fellowship (CDF) project. EDTCP envisages collaborative research that accelerates the clinical development of new or improved interventions to prevent or treat poverty related diseases in sub Saharan Africa.

The Kick-off meeting will include study team members, regulators, industry, and academia. VxMedSS’ vision is to establish a population-based surveillance platform for pharmacovigilance operating within both public and private health facilities. It is hoped that in the long run this will serve as a proof of concept and inspiration for pharmacovigilance at population level, improved awareness and patient reporting of adverse drug events in LMICs.

VxMedSS project will collect information on the vaccines and medicines received by patients, provide information about drug safety monitoring and encourage patients and healthcare workers to report ADEs. A platform for reporting of ADEs will be created and adopted that suits population needs to ease reporting

The project is piggybacking on the Iganga Mayuge Health Demographic Surveillance Site (IMHDSS) of Makerere Center for Health and Population Research. This is a population-based cohort with rich collaboration with communities of Iganga and Mayuge districts. The key stakeholders include Uganda’s National Drug Authority (the national drug regulator), Makerere University, The district health office/teams, district hospital, health care workers and community members.
